If you’re local to our area, you’ve probably heard about the legend of the Mazinaw Lake Monster. The story likely comes to mind, at least for a passing moment, every time you jump off the dock at a friend’s cottage on the lake, or hit the beach for a refreshing swim.

At least it does for my family when we make our regular summertime visits to Bon Echo Provincial Park. I’m sure we’re not alone.

It’s a story that has been told for generations. Is it true, or simply a tall tale designed to keep kids from swimming too far from the shoreline? While we may never know for certain, learn about some possible theories on the topic, courtesy the folks at Cottage Life Magazine.

By the way, I can verify that the photo above DOES NOT CAPTURE an image of the elusive creature. It’s just an old photo I took of my kids playing on the shoreline at Bon Echo with a swimmer off in the distance… but I bet it made you squint and take a closer look.
