Now that the calendar has flipped to March, the deep freeze of winter will soon be in our rear view mirror for another year. Thank goodness.

If the milder temperatures aren’t reason enough to celebrate, it also means that the sap will begin steadily flowing in our sugarbushes. This great news for Lennox & Addington’s maple syrup producers… and even better news for those of us that indulge our sweet tooth on a regular basis.

Here in L&A we have four producers that are members of the Ontario Maple Syrup Producers Association. Be sure to pick up a bottle from one of these great businesses, or better yet, get one from each of them. You know it won’t go to waste.

Denbigh Farms

Denbigh Farms has been in the Marquardt family since 1860. Their Canadian Shield maple syrup is collected through traditional techniques passed down for generations. They also produce all natural raw honey and beeswax products on their farm. You can purchase their product online and at their farm store at 59 Marquardt Road in Denbigh by appointment. Their products are also available at Rosie’s Cafe & General Store and Glaeser’s Country Store in Denbigh, and The Skoot House on Skootamatta lake. Find out more.

Eagle Rock Kerr Family Farm, Newburgh

Doug & Anne Kerr and family have been producing maple syrup from their farm north of Newburgh since 2008. Their 30 acre sugar bush has 1,800 taps. They use a pipeline vacuum pump with a reverse osmosis system that connects to a stainless steel evaporator to maximize their production. Their farm gate is open Monday – Saturday by chance or appointment. Their syrup is also available at Abrams Bakery in Newburgh, Roblin Gas Bar and Amherstview Foodland. Eagle Rock Kerr Family Farm is located at 322 Dowdle Road just north of the village  Find out more.

Hogans’ Honey & Maple Products, Bath

The Hogan family has been supplying the region with ‘unbearably good honey’ since 1934. In 2005 Ben and Tim expanded the business to include maple syrup production. About 700 buckets are used to collect sap in a sugar bush near Wilton. You can purchase their product at their retail location at 6605 Loyalist Parkway in Bath, and at Schell’s Market in Bath, No Frills and Harvest Brinery in Napanee. Find out more.

Salmon River Sugarbush, Tamworth

Salmon River Sugarbush, located at 180 Gilmore Road, is owned and operated by Mark & Amanda Youmans along with their son Cole. On their 160 acre property they have a 20-acre sugar bush with 800 taps on vacuum, with an additional 600 taps planned for 2022. Their roadside stand opens on March 8th and they have a brand new website complete with an online store. You can also find their product at Beaver Lake Variety & More in Erinsville, in Tamworth at Stone Mills Family Market, Pro Hardware, A-1 Corner Restaurant and Black Cat Cafe, Free Flow in Newburgh, in Napanee at Gray’s IDA and Wallace’s Grocery in Napanee, Milligan Meats and Finnegan’s General Store in Cloyne and Petro-Canada Northbrook. Find out more.
