By Cole Youmans, Naturally L&A — Just off of Highway 41 in Northbrook lies a hidden gem for food and music lovers. Spill the Beanz, located at 12 Pederson Road, has served the local community with good tunes and good food for nearly 20 years.

Owned by John Fradenburgh, this unique business regularly attracts customers from the surrounding areas who come to play music themselves, or come just to enjoy the food and the environment. It is also a favourite of tourists travelling along the highway, who commonly state their fondness for the communal feeling of the restaurant.

The restaurant side of the business is known for their excellent coffee and all day breakfast. The menu is prone to change, but currently they offer everything from pancake breakfast, to grilled cheese, to dessert. As mentioned their coffee is excellent, and they also have an expresso machine, offer tea, chai tea, and iced coffee. It’s also quite common to be treated with a musical performance from one of the talented regulars who stop in to play and take advantage of the music store’s selection.

The music side of the business is also incredibly well-stocked, and has been in operation even longer than the restaurant has. They offer all sorts of musical supplies, such as electronic tuners, instrument cables, drumsticks, humidity control systems, and much more. They also sell instruments including guitars, steel guitars, mandolins, and violins, as well the strings for all of these instruments. John is also able to re-string your instruments for you, replace the links in your watch, or swap out your car battery.

John and his employees say that their favourite part of the job is meeting new people and building relationships. The restaurant has developed its own group of regulars over the years and mingling with the mixture of new and old faces is particularly satisfying.

Make sure you stop in at Spill the Beanz to check out their wide selection of musical supplies, and grab some coffee and a bite to eat while you’re there. You can follow them on Facebook for any updates, and you can check out their menu (prone to change) through this link.
