By Cole Youmans, Naturally L&A — Second Chance Ranch in Odessa is an animal sanctuary and rehabilitation centre that offers animals a safe and quiet environment surrounded by committed caregivers. They currently care for over one hundred animals and provide services that include outdoor boarding, animal rehabilitation and rehousing. They also have groomed trails available for immersive nature walks with the animals.

Read on to learn more about this important Lennox & Addington farm-based business.

How Did They Get Started?

Roughly 10 years ago, Darren and Yolanda Pruner purchased a 132-acre property so that they could have more room to house and graze their own horses. They soon began to receive an overwhelming amount of requests to house, rehome, and rehabilitate other people’s animals. This demand has proven to be constant and this non-profit business has been growing ever since. In addition to horses, they have since introduced chickens, goats, alpacas, pigs, and donkeys, peacocks and more to the ranch.

What Sets Them Apart?

When we asked Darren what sets Second Chance Ranch apart from other animal shelters and rehabilitation centres, he emphatically stated “Our volunteers; their compassion and their dedication”. This level of compassion and dedication results in a much more effective rehabilitation environment for the animals, as well as an amazing experience for visitors to the ranch.

What’s an Average Day on the Ranch Look Like?

An average day on the ranch for visitors is full of action. You’ll receive a crash-course on how to feed the animals. You’ll then be guided through the ranch and allowed to give animals treats. Knowledgeable staff and volunteers will answer any questions you may have, and dish out the occasional fun fact or tip along the way. From engaging tours and trail rides to animal visits and more recent events like equine Reiki, there’s an abundance of activities to ensure you’ll never run out of things to do at the ranch.
