L&A Forest Trails

Rugged Granite Hiking | Addington Highlands

The area’s premier mountain bike trails are found within the L&A Forest Trails, offering 10km of technical single-track and logging roads. Riders can experience the Tall Pines ride through 120 acres of managed woodland or utilize the L&A Tall Pines Ride to explore the rugged granite outcrops and mature pine stands of Addington Highlands.

The L&A Forest Trails sits on 120 acres of managed woodland on the Canadian Shield near Flinton. The forest is defined by large stands of mature pine, exposed granite, and purpose-built “skinnies” for technical riding. The trails here double as a key part of the county’s Trails & Nature Parks system and have become a go-to spot for off-road cycling in this part of Ontario. Hikers use them just as heavily, and in winter, the groomed sections draw fat bikers and cross-country skiers.

What to Expect

The trail network mixes wide logging roads with narrow single-track. The western loops carry the most elevation change, with climbs and descents over exposed rock that keep things interesting across skill levels. Hikers share these trails and get just as much out of them as the riders do.

Here’s What’s Different

  • Technical Granite: Natural rock drops and climbs shaped by the Shield landscape itself.
  • Managed Berms: High-banked corners on the Pines Loop built specifically for mountain bike flow.
  • Dual Use: Trails are groomed in winter for both fat biking and snowshoeing.

Good to Know

  • A bicycle repair station is located just inside the trailhead for minor maintenance.
  • ATVers and snowmobilers are restricted to the Orange Marker section of the L&A Forest Trails only, accessed from 5th Concession Road to the east and from the northernmost section. Motorized riders are asked to stay along the hydro lines east of the forest to connect to other trail systems.
  • Bicycle riders, hikers, snowshoers, and skiers should stay off the Orange Marker section of the trail.

Cycle the rail trails: abandoned train tracks make excellent cycling routes once the rails are removed. Check out The Trans Canada Trail (Kaladar Trail leg) or Cataraqui Trail (just east of Napanee in Strathcona) for more off-road riding.

  • The forest is home to “Fraggle Rock” and “Emerald City,” two of the most scenic moss-covered sections on the Land of Enchantment trail.
  • The trail system covers 120 acres of protected woodland maintained by Lennox and Addington County.
  • Bring your GPS and search for a few geocaches hidden within the forest.

Your Route

The Pines Loop

Difficulty: Easy

Directional Markers: Green

Length: Approx. 2.5km

The Pines Loop will get you where you need to go, as most of the interior trails connect to to it.  The loop incorporates old logging roads and provides access to all the trails in the forest. Mountain bikers will enjoy the high berms at the main corners.

Dipsy Doodle

Difficulty: Moderate/Difficult

Directional Markers: Dark Blue

Length: Approx. 2.4km

As the name suggests, the Dipsy Doodle Trails take you up, down and around the western-most section of the forest. Explore Little Rock & Big Rock and make a jump or two off the skinnies. There are many sections of this trail, some wide and some not-so-wide. There is quite a drop off along Ridgeline so be careful!

Southern Dip

Difficulty: Easy

Directional Markers: Purple

Length: Approx. 600m

The Southern Dip is a nice little hike that couples two old logging roads with a newly-created path that weaves through the forest. It’s not a long detour from the Pines Loop, but is definitely a worthwhile hike or ride near the southern border of the property.

Land of Enchantment

Difficulty: Medium

Directional Markers: Light Grey

Length: Approx. 1.5km

Enter the land of Enchantment! This trail is accessible from Dipsy Doodle and Southern Dip. The middle takes you through bright green moss at Emerald City before you head down to Fraggle Rock… it doesn’t get much more enchanted than that!

Cut Through Trail

Difficulty: Easy

Directional Markers: Red

Length: Approx. 750m

Cut Through Trail meanders east-west through the forest, connecting with the Up & Down Trail at Crisscross Junction. The trail takes you through the widely-spaced planted section of the managed forest and into the most densely treed area of the property.

Up & Down Trail

Difficulty: Easy

Directional Markers: Yellow

Length: Approx. 500m

On the Up & Down Trail you weave through the forest, connecting with the Cut Through Trail at Crisscross Junction. The path takes you through mature pines, maples and birch groves for an enjoyable hike or ride.

Church Pass

Difficulty: Easy

Directional Markers: Light Blue

Length: Approx. 250m

The Church Pass provides a straight on view to the Flinton Church (or takes you directly away from it, if you prefer). It’s a nice straight trail with large berms at both end. Build up some speed and take them hard!

Lost & Found

Difficulty: Medium | Hard

Directional Markers: Brown

Length: Approx. 750m

You’ll be Lost & Found in this section of the forest. The name is appropriate, as we initially thought that the Derecho storm in 2022 destroyed this entire section of trail. Fortunately we were able to salvage most of it!

Motorized Trail

Directional Markers: Orange

Length: Approx. 750m

Only motorized vehicles are permitted in this part of the trail. Bicycle riders and hikers, please avoid this section.

ATVs, dirt bikes and snowmobiles are required to stay on this section of the County Forest. It is accessed from 5th Concession Road to the east, and from Old Flinton Road from the south. Motorized riders are asked to stay along the hydro lines east of the forest to connect to other regional trail systems.
