Summer is the perfect time to take a leisurely drive. You can’t go wrong when you combine a bright, sunny day with unspoiled scenic vistas. With well over a thousand kilometres of roadways to choose from in Lennox & Addington, there’s no shortage of ways to spend a day enjoying the open road.
I recently took advantage of beautiful August afternoon to take a drive along the Loyalist Parkway. I started my journey in Amherstview and made my way west to the Glenora Ferry. You can drive this stretch of highway in about thirty minutes, but with so much to see and do, I spent a full afternoon visiting historic sites, taking walks in the park, and sampling local food & wine.
Below is my list of top spots to visit along the way.
1. Fairfield Park, Amherstview
You have a great view of Amherst Island from the park, and the tall shade trees will keep you cool.
The Fairfield House is now open for summer tours. One of several wood frame structures from the Loyalist era, the house was built in 1793 by New England Loyalist William Fairfield.
While you’re at the park, be sure to grab a bite to eat from Mannette at The Soup Chef Food Truck.
2. Parrott’s Bay Conservation Area, Amherstview
Parrott’s Bay Conservation Area is managed by the Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority. It’s an amazing 289 acre property with a variety of wooded areas, wetlands, and beautiful waterfront views.
3. Ferry to Amherst Island
If you haven’t made a visit to Amherst Island, be sure to add this to your bucket list. The ferry ride is fun on its own, and there’s lots to explore on this unique island community. I didn’t make the trek on this particular afternoon, but check out this blog by Mike Hector that details his experience.
4. Village of Bath
There is ample history on display in the village of Bath. The streets are lined with historic homes, and the Bath Museum, Fairfield-Gutzeit House are open.
The downtown offers a number of unique shopping experiences. And be sure to stop for a scoop of ice cream from 360 Castaways, a cup of coffee from The Lodge Coffee House or a delicious meal from Welborne Commons.
Finkle’s Shore Park is another great waterfront park where you can relax and enjoy the breeze off the lake.
5. Loyalist Trading Company, Conway
The Loyalist Trading Co. is a unique little store that offers many Canadian made artisan products that are not available in other locations.They have a unique mix of gourmet, jewellry, bath and body, blown glass garden art, unique finds like beard oil for the guys, retro candy, and weaving.
And they also have a little goat in the pen beside the store.
6. The Wineries in Adolphustown
Bergeron Estate Winery is a 10-acre vineyard that produces several wines and sources local orchards to create Cole Point – their hard apple cider. Also on site is Nonna’s Pizzeria. Another great stop is 33 Vines. Stop by and visit this wonderful property and try one of their vintages of Chardonnay, Riesling, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir and Merlot. A little closer to the ferry is L&A’s newest winery, Longrid Estates Vineyards & Winery. They produce Gewurztraminer, Sweet Riesling, Fruit Feast White Wine & Midsummer Night Orange Sweet Wine on their beautiful property that overlooks Bass Cove and Hay Bay.
7. UEL Heritage Centre & Park, Adolphustown
The UEL Heritage Centre & Park is a great spot for both history buffs and for those that like the great outdoors. The location is on the original United Empire Loyalist landing site dating back to 1784. The Heritage Centre houses Loyalist research and memorabilia.
The Park offers seasonal, transient camping and has a sandy, day-use beach.

8. St. Alban’s Centre
St. Alban’s Church was built as a Memorial to the United Empire Loyalists who helped found the province of Ontario. They offer space to the community for meetings, classes, clubs or lectures. They have a fabulour outdoor cafe that is open Thursday – Sunday from 9 am – 1 pm in July & August. New for 2022, they also have a very cool Escape Room Experience!

I just didn’t have enough time to visit all the great things there is to do on the Loyalist Parkway. Depending on the season, you definitely won’t want to miss stops at Wynn Farms Apple Orchard, Wynn Farm Flower Fields, Berries by the Bay, & Spring Meadow Orchards.
