I’m the type of person that needs to have a plan before I go anywhere, and my favourite plans are the ones made for me. Oftentimes when I visit a new place or am looking for something new to do in my community, I’ll look for an itinerary online.
This itinerary is a blueprint for a fun day in Stone Mills Township, created for all the like-minded people who want to enjoy the sites, but don’t necessarily want the hassle of planning it for themselves. That said, feel free to add in some stops you see along the way. This township offers many exciting shops, great food options and beautiful rural scenery.
The spots included in this blog focus on the Tamworth/Erinville area, but there’s so much more to explore in this wonderful township. I’ll feature as many as I can over the summer. But for now, let’s see where I went.
The Blue Door Bakery and Cafe
5 Concession Street South, Tamworth
Start the day off right with a treat from The Blue Door Bakery! Whitney and her team offer a delicious variety of bars, cakes, tarts, and more. While I love absolutely everything on the menu, I would highly recommend their lemon squares. If you’re looking for a meal, try one of their daily specials with a sweet dessert to finish it off. This is a must-visit location for sure!
The Book Shop
2-10 County Road 4, Tamworth
A short walk down the road from the last stop, in a beautiful Victorian home, is the Book Shop. Take some time looking through the two floors of their hand-picked, great quality second-hand books. With their abundant selection of book genres – and about 20,000 books in the shop – you’ll without a doubt find your next favourite read!
The Lakeview Tavern Restaurant
5771 County Road 41, Erinsville
Erinsville’s local landmark since 1878 still stands strong and serves delicious food! The Lakeview Tavern Restaurant is the next stop on this itinerary where you can enjoy a sandwich, fish and chips, burgers, and much more. Sit down to eat, inside or out on their patio, or take your food to go. Make sure to fuel up here before heading over to our last 2 stops.
Sheffield Conservation Area
8032 County Road 41, Erinsville
A short drive north up County Road 41 is Sheffield Conservation Area. This location consists of a 4.5km looped trail with some challenging terrain for the eager hiker. Enjoy the views and fresh air of this trail! Not only is this a great spot for a hike, but there is also a boat launch for paddling on Little Melon Lake. Be sure to stop here on your next trip to Stone Mills!
Dark Sky Viewing Area
7980 County Road 41, Erinsville
To end off a fun-filled day, head right next door to the conservation area and spend some time gazing at the magnificent sky above us at the Dark Sky Viewing Area. As someone who moved from the GTA to L&A County, this is an unbelievable sight to see. Attend for general stargazing on a clear night, or enjoy a Laser-Guided Stargazing Tour to learn all about our galaxy from the knowledgeable volunteers. Bring your lawn chair and curiosity for this exciting experience!
